#121 Pittsburgh - Team Colors Collection - Don Soar

Tied by: Don Soar
Originated by: Don Soar

Hook: Mustad B-17 #2
Thread: White
Tail: Yellow hackle fibers
Body: Yellow floss
Rib: Black wire
Belly: White bucktail
Throat: Yellow hackle fibers
Wing: Four black hackles
Shoulder: Silver pheasant
Eye: Jungle cock
Head: Black with yellow band

Notes: This one could easily have been Carrie Stevens’ version of the Black Ghost had Herb Welch not created his version of the iconic streamer. Both the silver pheasant shoulder and the Steeler’s colors make this a shoe-in for a Stevens design. I also noticed that Don used a little bit heavy hook for this tie, perhaps to honor the likes of The Hammer, Iron Mike and Mean Joe Greene.

Don Soar – Born and raised in central Massachusetts now living in Lancaster with my wife of twenty years Nancy. Fishing started young in life tagging along with my brothers. I took up fly fishing in the early 90’s. Ten years later I started tying flies. After meeting Mike Martinek Jr. at a local fly shop I was introduced to the dark side of fly tying, the long fly.
