#228 Pink Beauty – Marcelo Morales

Tied by: Marcelo Morales
Originated by: Carrie Stevens
Source: Forgotten Flies, Schmookler & Sils (1999)

Hook: Partridge CS15 #4
Thread: Black 6/0
Body: Flat silver tinsel
Belly: White bucktail
Throat: Pink hackle fibers
Underwing: 4-6 peacock herls
Wing: 4 carnation pink hackles
Shoulder: Bronze mallard flank
Eye: Jungle cock (optional)
Head: Black with orange band

Notes: This dressing was taken from Austin Hogan’s correspondence with Carrie Stevens and varies a little from that published in Graydon and Leslie Hilyard’s book. The Hilyard dressing calls for a silver tag, black body, silver ribbing and a yellow throat. Based on what is known about her patterns, it is possible that more than one version was tied, having evolved over time. Marcelo brings his unique style to the project with this streamer. He has tied the streamer with a slightly tapered body and the head shape he has become so well known for in streamer circles.

Marcelo Morales – I began fly fishing in the early seventies. Jorge Donovan and Bebe Anchorena were my mentors, they were fantastic casters and know the rivers intimately. Both were very good friends of Joe Brooks and it was from him that they learnt the way of the big streamers and monster browns. Just to make my life easier, I build bamboo rods and fish them a lot along my country. My mother paints watercolors, and my father painted with oils when he was young so I think fly fishing in my case is another form of art and I try to feel like an artist creating something unique every time I tie a fly, build a rod or fish.
