#312 Deep Blue – Bill Chandler

Tied by: Bill Chandler
Originated by: Bill Chandler

Hook: Gaelic Supreme Mike Martinek Rangeley Streamer hook 10xl #1
Thread: Black 8/0
Body: Dark blue flat tinsel
Belly: White bucktail
Throat: Red then black schlappen
Underwing: Pearl or peacock crystal flash
Under-shoulder: Red then black schlappen
Wing: 4 kingfisher blue hackles
Shoulder: Green jungle fowl feather
Eyes: Jungle cock nail
Head: Black

Notes: Like a mystic azure sapphire, Bill’s Deep Blue hypnotizes the casual onlooker. The fly should fair well on overcast days and in the spring time when the darkened rainbow smelts begin to congregate near river inflows to prepare for spawning. The little splash of red in a nice touch on the blue lure, giving hungry fish the motivation the need to strike out and take the ‘bait’.

Bill ChandlerBill Chandler – I have been tying flies for the Angler and the collector since 1978. I discovered fly fishing and fly tying by watching a Canadian angling show one Saturday morning. Since then I have spent a considerable time of my life learning both the old and new techniques of tying flies.
