Notes: The Miramichi Special is a popular fly in New Brunswick during the spring salmon runs. While the term “Miramichi Special” also pertains to a flat plywood bottomed river craft, it streamer has won notoriety on it’s own among salmon anglers who comb the shores of storied salmon rivers. The fly challenges the likes of the Mickey Finn, Renous Special and Golden Eagle as the goto flies on the Miramichi for seasoned anglers and guides. The pattern is a local one for the Miramichi, so variations are inevitable. Several versions of the fly exist, but most of the recipes lie along the recipe above. The top portion of the wing is constructed from the brown hair of a yellow dyed bucktail which results in a beautiful olive tone.
Bill Chandler – I have been tying flies for the Angler and the collector since 1978. I discovered fly fishing and fly tying by watching a Canadian angling show one Saturday morning. Since then I have spent a considerable time of my life learning both the old and new techniques of tying flies.
