#84-2013 MacTavish Red – Scott Murdock

Tied by: Scott Murdock
Originated by: Scott Murdock

Hook: Daiichi Alec Jackson #3/0
Thread: Black 8/0
Tag: Silver oval tinsel
Body: Red floss
Rib: Silver Doctor Blue floss edged by silver oval tinsel
Throat: Guinea fowl
Wing: Claret bucktail under light blue bucktail under red bucktail
Cheek: Jungle cock
Head: Black

Notes: Scott drew on the colours in the MacTavish Red tartan to create the 4 streamer in his Tartan Series. The modern MacTavish Red tartan is primarily red with light blue and black. Scott used a traditional east coast salmon fly presentation for the streamer, and we hope to see the design fished on the eastern salmon rivers next fall.

scott_murdockScott Murdock- I started tying flies in the 80’s and it wasn’t long before I made a visit to The American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester VT to visit a family rod that was displayed there. I noticed the Atlantic Salmon Fly plates that were then on display. Realizing that I actually had an idea of how these things were constructed (yet knowing that I had a lot to learn) I drank the proverbial “Kool-aid” and embarked on the process of learning to tie display patterns.
