I started tying flies about 1967 in Wausau, Wisconsin when I worked for Kraft Foods. I have been lucky to get lessons from Dick Talleur & Bob Veverka, and a long time friendship and correspondence with John Shewey. I learned Spey flies from John, Streamers & Dee flies from Bob, and everything else from Dick.
I catch most of my fish on streamers, the largest brown I ever caught was on a size 8 Matuka, he was about 26 inches long in a small stream in North Central Wisconsin. I have fished all over Pa. and Ohio, and Ky. and ‘I wish again to fish again in Michigan”. My all time favorite author and fisherman’Robert Traver’ aka John Voelker, or vice versa.
I feel that I have been very fortunate in my lifetime to have known such wonderful gentlemen, who just happened to be great tyers. I have been trying to give back by giving lessons locally, and wherever anyone will have me.
There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the light in a young guy/girl’s eyes, when they create their first fly. Life is about giving, especially when you reach my age. I just hope that I can continue to teach for many more years.
