Mike’s Biography

I started tying flies for Trout in the early 1960’s. My folks bought me a little boxed fly tying kit from the local sporting goods store that included a Thompson vise, some hackles and various body and winging materials. A couple of my father’s friends taught me how to cast a fly, and the obsession with flies and fly fishing began.

My tying includes many genres of feather wing flies: Atlantic Salmon, Classic Steelhead, Mary Orvis Marbury flies, and Streamers, plus a few classic wets now and then. Though most of my learning came from books, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from some very good tyers: John Shewey, Ronn Lucas, Paul Rossman, Bud Guidry, Steve Fernandez, Ted Patlen, to name a few.

My friend Lee Schechter and I have written two articles on the Mary Orvis Marbury flies. One is in the premier issue of Hatches magazine, and another in Fly Tyer magazine. A number of my flies will be in the upcoming Atlantic Salmon Fly book written and photographed by Mike Radencich.

My website has been up for several years now: http://www.favoriteflies.net/mikes_site/page/home.htm
