Piccaso Fly Pattern

Hook: Gaelic Supreme Mike Martinek Rangeley streamer hook #2 8xl
Thread: Black FWN
Tag: Silver embossed tinsel
Tail: Black schlappen
Body: Mixed UNI-yarn, black, brown and khaki
Rib: Silver embossed tinsel
Belly: White bucktail
Throat: Pink hackle fibers
Wing: 2 black hackles flanked by white hackle flanked by light Coq de Leon
Eye: Jungle cock nail
Head: Black

Notes: The pattern is a tribute to a cat named Piccaso that passed away in 2015. The colors in the pattern reflect the colors she had in her coat, and of course the pink throat is tied for her nose. Over the years, she had contributed to several dubbing mixes which were tied into nymph patterns. These flies caught a good deal of Arctic grayling and trout which she was offered a share.

Darren MacEachern – Darren has been fishing from the age of 4 all across Canada. He started on the east coast in Prince Edward Island before moving west to the banks of the Bow River in Calgary Alberta. he now resides just outside of Toronto, fishing the Great Lakes and the fine tributary waters around.

Undulaatti Fly Pattern

Hook: Mustad 3907 A #2
Thread: White 8/0
Tag: Silver embossed tinsel
Body: White floss
Rib: Silver embossed tinsel
Belly: White bucktail
Throat: Silver Dr. blue schlappen
Under-wing: 4-6 peacock herls
Wing: 2 Silver Dr. blue hackles flanked by yellow hackle
Shoulder: Lemon wood duck flank
Eye: Jungle cock nail
Head: White

Notes: The Undulaatti featherwing streamer is a bright yellow fly with blue undertones. In Finnish, Undulaatti means budgie, a suiting name for the brightly coloured fly. Tomas used Carrie Stevens’ Morning Glory pattern as the starting inspiration and swapped colors on some materials to arrive at the finished streamer. The streamer was tested in Finnish waters during the spring run and faired well with trout.

Tuomas-Iso-Ahola_head Tuomas Iso-Ahola – I was born in Kalmari (Saarijärvi, Finland) 1983. My fishing history began when I was four years old. My father took me with him to fish with a hook and worm. In 2005 I started to fly fish and was instantly ”hooked”. Fly fishing is my lifestyle and my favorite places to fish are the rivers.

Antique Streamer Fly Pattern Recipe

Hook: Mustad #2 8xl R79-94720
Thread: Black 8/0
Tail: Barred wood duck fibers
Body: Yellow floss
Rib: Gold flat tinsel
Belly: White bucktail
Throat: Red hackle fibers
Wing: Ginger hackle flanked by Coq de Leon hackle
Shoulder: Black tipped ringneck pheasant breast
Eye: Jungle cock nail
Head: Black

Notes:

Cameron has created a series of original designs based on and inspired by the works of Carrie Stevens. The Antique and Copper has been created to mimic the colors of baitfish that can be found in and around the Great Lakes where Cameron often chooses to wet a line. The streamers have also found success swimming the waters of the Ottawa river and the historical Rideau river.

Cameron Sangster Cameron Sangster – I was 9 years old and my grandfather was an avid Atlantic salmon and brook trout fly fisherman. He would take yearly trips to the Gaspe region of Quebec to fish the Matapedia and other rivers. I was introduced to fly fishing by him and my father at a private fishing club they belonged to. One time before one of his salmon trips my grandfather placed some used salmon flies on the table. He asked me to tie them as close as possible to the original. From then on, after taking a few lessons, I have been tying off and on for 35 yrs.

This recently sold well below what it should have, but one lucky collector now has this hanging in a special place. The frame contained 25 of Jim’s original streamers and was one of 20 he produced.

Bill ChandlerBill Chandler – I have been tying flies since 1978. I discovered fly fishing and fly tying by watching a Canadian angling show one Saturday morning. Since then I have spent a considerable time of my life learning both the old and new techniques of tying flies. I specialize in tying the Classic styles of flies, such as Catskill Dry Flies, Rangeley style Streamers and Classic and Artistic Salmon Flies.
I am a professional tyer, but not a commercial tyer. I refer to myself as a pattern creator and developer. I am always looking for new materials and techniques to create flies for both fresh and salt water anglers.

Throat: Black schlappen
Under-wing: Silver pheasant crest

It was after testing several combination that the wood duck flank and the black and yellow wing was decided upon. Welcome to the site Tuomas, and thank you for sharing your talents with us.
