Notes: The Golden Eagle is a favortie streamer for targeting the kelt salmon of the Miramichi in the spring time. Kelts, also known as black salmon, are hens that have survived the spawn and head back out to sea when the winter ice begins to recede. They are aggressive feeders and feed on smelts from ice out to May when they return. On the Miramichi River, about 20% the Atlantic salmon will return to spawn again.

Gary TannerGary Tanner – I spent 10 years working for the National Wild Turkey Federation, first as a Regional Director, and finally as their first Director of Development. I then became Executive Director of the American Museum of Fly Fishing, a position I held for almost 7 years – making me the longest serving director of that institution in its history (trust me, that’s an accomplishment!). I left the nonprofit world to become, happily, a self-employed carpenter/cabinet maker.

  1. Thank you both for the kind words. And just a little addendum to the notes above, kelts are both male and female atlantics (not just female) heading back to the sea after a winter under the river ice.

Beautiful job Gary. I don’t remember seeing this pattern before. Very simple, yet classy, at the same time.
